The practice of using digital tools to tell stories in educational settings, offers both advantages and disadvantages. According to researchers, digital storytelling invigorates teacher effectiveness by increasing student engagement, fostering creativity, and encouraging critical thinking. The approach supports language teachers in developing core competencies such as instructional planning, classroom management, and technological fluency. Researchers look at digital storytelling as a forward looking, learner centered strategy that can modernize language teaching methods and better align with the demands of contemporary education. Proponents advocate for embedding digital storytelling practices into teacher education programs to help educators navigate and thrive in digitally enhanced classrooms (Subhamol and Shobana, 2025). Khan also posited that videos could revolutionize teaching by providing visual clarity, flexible pacing, and a private space where students can rewatch until they truly understand a concept (Khan, 2011).

The impact of digital storytelling was examined among seventh grade students in India in relation to cognitive flexibility and divergent thinking. Using a post test only control group design, two randomly selected sections were compared: one received the digital storytelling activities, while the other did not. Results showed that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in both cognitive flexibility and divergent thinking. However, the interaction between prior creativity experience and group on divergent thinking was not statistically significant. The findings suggest that integrating digital storytelling into classroom practice can foster flexible and creative thinking among students (Saini, 2025). In 2023, a mixed methods study was conducted in a primary school in Singapore involving 30 teachers via questionnaires and 5 teachers via interviews to explore the use of visual storytelling in teaching English vocabulary. Teachers noted a range of benefits across four domains —affective, cognitive, pedagogical, and socio behavioural. Visual storytelling was particularly effective in motivating students, enhancing comprehension and memory, and supporting teaching practice and learner interaction (Bao Chau, 2023). Undeniably, videos are valuable teaching resources. This multimodal approach can enhance student understanding and retention of content, especially in subjects that benefit from visual representation or narrative explanation. Additionally, it encourages student collaboration and critical thinking, as they plan, script, and edit their stories. Teachers can also use digital storytelling to present complex topics in more digestible and relatable formats, helping students to better connect with the material. Furthermore, it develops students' digital literacy and communication skills, which are essential in the modern world.

Despite these advantages, there are also significant drawbacks that teachers can’t brush aside. One major challenge is the time and effort required to plan and implement digital storytelling projects. Creating effective digital stories demands considerable preparation, technical knowledge, and classroom time. Not all teachers are comfortable or proficient with the required technology, which can be a barrier to successful implementation. Technical difficulties, such as software malfunctions or limited access to digital tools and reliable internet, can further hinder the process and disrupt learning. Moreover, the varying levels of student access to technology at home can create equity issues. While some students may have the tools and support needed to work on projects outside of school, others may struggle due to lack of devices or internet connectivity. Additionally, assessing digital storytelling projects can be subjective and challenging, as teachers must evaluate both the content and the technical execution. This may require new rubrics and assessment strategies that align with both curricular goals and digital skills.
In conclusion, while digital storytelling offers powerful educational benefits—engaging students, promoting creativity, and enhancing digital literacy—it also poses challenges related to time, resources, teacher preparedness, and student equity. In a universal viewpoint, many teachers around the world depend heavily on what resources are supplied by their school administration or the state. Budget constraints, outdated facilities, or limited access to modern teaching aids can restrict instructional methods. Teachers must weigh these factors carefully when deciding how to integrate digital storytelling into their classrooms. Proper training, access to technology, and thoughtful planning can help mitigate the disadvantages and allow educators to fully harness the potential of digital storytelling in education.
